It might be a trick question because

Quote:
what is the area of a triangle that is 1/4 the base of your house. Assuming your house's base is 12 feet

In which case it would be 4 and you wouldn't have to do the math.

Or is it worded wrong?

b = 12/4/2
b = 3/2
b = 1.5

h = 12/2
h = 6

area of trangle

bh/2

A = 1.5*6/2
A = 9/2
A = 4.5

So isnt it 4.5, or did i read it wrong?

18 feet squared

Don't read this elric :p
Spoiler:
Original Question (copy and paste)
If Area of a triangle = 1/2 base times height, what is the area of a triangle that is 1/4 the base of your house. Assuming your house's base is 12 feet, with a height half its base.

Three Statements:
If Area of a triangle = 1/2 base times height,
Statement one ending in a comma
Gives basic information required for question (area of triangle)

what is the area of a triangle that is 1/4 the base of your house.
Statement two ending in a period
Establishes the question:
Find the area of the triangle that is 1/4 of the base of your house

Assuming your house's base is 12 feet, with a height half its base.
Statement three ending in a period
Concludes question.
Presents information:
Base of house is 12 feet
Height of house is b/2 = 6 feet

You are given that the area of the triangle is 1/4 the base of your house. However the base of your house that is given (12 feet) is an incompatible unit with area (units squared). Therefore the base that the triangle is 1/4 of cannot be the given 12 feet. Therefore one concludes that the base must be referring to a square unit (feet^2). A house is a three dimensional object with a 2 dimensional aspect, the base. The value given for the base can’t represent an area thus in order to solve the question it must refer to one side of the base of the house aka the base of a rectangle (the average house has 4 sides usually perpendicular to each other forming a rectangle). From this we determine the base of the house is a rectangle with sides 12 feet and 6 feet and an area of 72 feet squared. A triangle with an area equal to 1/4th of this would have an area of 18 feet squared.
