It's similar to us. The chicken came first because even though evolution takes millenniums, at one point, an organism is considered to be something else. If you look at the scientific drawings, you don't see the constant changes written out, you just see Monkey=>Human and so on. So the chicken came first.

ergo - dinosaur/fish eggs were around far longer before the first chicken.

The change starts right when the fertilization and growth begins. It would make sense.
