It's similar to us. The chicken came first because even though evolution takes millenniums, at one point, an organism is considered to be something else. If you look at the scientific drawings, you don't see the constant changes written out, you just see Monkey=>Human and so on. So the chicken came first.

Actually you have a point, the egg came first. The evolution happens once the egg is laid.

so you are kind of right as it is in the egg that this happens.

besides, if we define eggs as ova, as in the female gamete then it can go even further back with even more primitive creatures using spores/whatever that count as eggs, just not in the traditional sense. (see sea sponge they just spray their goodies into the water and have been doing so far longer then either fish or chickens)

Ahh, that's an exelent point. The change starts right when the fertilization and growth begins. It would make sense.
