Anime comes form the term Animation. Animation spelled in japanese is アニメーション. Romanized is Animeshun. Hence -Anime-. Cartoons came first btw. Cartoons were conceived from as early as 19th century. Anime was conceived in 20th Century Japan. The difference between the two was that anime was originally reels of paper. Nowadays, Anime essentially is cartoons that cater to the japanese public. Don't say cartoons is different from anime now. It's not....

Nah I studied Japanese Culture/History in College. We had a month dedicated just to japan in asian studies. Historically, modern anime was conceived as a result of japanese trying to compete with foreign animators with their own cartoons/anime.
